Today, by a 9-0 decision, the United States Supreme Court affirmed the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision that the case CJA’s clients have brought against General Ali Samantar, former Minister of Defense of Somalia, can proceed. The Court’s unanimous ruling confirms that foreign government officials, who come and avail themselves of the benefits and privileges of living in the U.S., are not above the law. CJA and our clients would like to thank the many people and organizations who helped make this victory a reality. In particular, we would also like to thank our Supreme Court counsel Patricia Millett of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP and co-counsel Cooley, LLP.
