Dr. Gilat J. Bachar, from Israel, is a Stanford Law School Postgraduate Public Interest Fellow at the Center for Justice and Accountability. Gilat has recently graduated with a J.S.D (doctorate) from Stanford Law School, where she specialized in comparative tort law, dispute resolution, and civil procedure. Her dissertation focused on conflict-related accountability and compensation mechanisms and the role legal actors play in such mechanisms. Gilat also holds an LL.B. in Law and an M.B.A. in Business Administration, both summa cum laude, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a J.S.M in International Legal Studies from Stanford Law School.
In Israel, Gilat served as a Legal Clerk for Chief Justice Beinisch, President of the Israeli Supreme Court, and an associate at S. Horowitz & Co., one of Israel’s leading law firms, where she specialized in dispute resolution. At Stanford, Gilat was a fellow at the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation and at the Haas Center for Public Service. Her work was published or is forthcoming in such journals as Cardozo Law Review, The Chicago Journal of International Law, University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law, SMU Law Review, and Chicago-Kent Law Review, and was awarded, among other honors, the Goldsmith Writing Prize in Dispute Resolution, the Franklin Writing Prize in International Law (twice), and the American Society of Comparative Law’s Younger Comparativists Prize. She also serves as a Visiting Lecturer on International Law at UC Santa Cruz’s Politics department.
