CJA Human Rights Begin at Home Un-Gala

Please join us at your home for the Center for Justice and Accountability’s Un-Gala as we celebrate our 2021 award winners, human rights, and international justice.

Champion of Justice

The Champion of Justice Award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the field of human rights. This year, we are honored to present this award to Ben Ferencz and Collette Flanagan.

Ben Ferencz was the chief prosecutor for the United States in The Einsatzgruppen Case at the Nuremburg Tribunal and a pioneer in the field of international justice. The Nuremberg trials established a principle which is at the core of CJA’s work: That certain crimes are so egregious that they represent offenses against all humankind. Following his work at Nuremberg, Ferencz dedicated himself to studying and writing about world peace, going on to have a significant role in forming the International Criminal Court. At 101 years old, he continues to write and advocate for international justice and global peace.

Collette Flanagan founded Mothers Against Police Brutality (MAPB) after her son, Clinton Allen, was shot to death by a Dallas police officer in March 2013. Her experiences seeking accountability for her son’s killing led to the creation of MAPB, which works to challenge police use of excessive and deadly force by empowering mothers and other family members who have lost loved ones to state violence. Over the past year, she has been at the forefront of bringing the struggle to end the extrajudicial killing of Black Americans to the international level, including at the United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. At this moment when it is more important than ever to focus international attention on human rights challenges here in the United States, Flanagan has been a champion for justice and accountability.

Judith Lee Stronach

The Judith Lee Stronach Award honors individuals and organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to the movement for global justice. This year, it is our privilege to present this award to the Women’s League of Burma (WLB). This award recognizes the women and thirteen member organizations that make up WLB, and their leadership in advancing human rights for women of all ethnic and religious identities in Burma. Over the past two years, CJA has partnered with WLB in its efforts to advocate for stronger legal protections for women across Burma. In the aftermath of February’s coup, they have continued to advocate for the protection of women and a return to civilian rule, illustrating WLB’s critical role in preserving human rights and democratic values in Burma.

Partner in Justice

The Partner in Justice Award recognizes the remarkable partnerships that make CJA’s work possible. This year, it is our pleasure to present this award to Morrison & Foerster LLP and Dentons US LLP, CJA’s pro bono co-counsel in Boniface v. Viliena. Together, we are seeking justice on behalf of media activists and human rights defenders targeted for speaking out against government corruption in rural Haiti. Throughout this case, and especially over this past year of unprecedented logistical challenges to transnational litigation, the teams at Morrison & Foerster and Dentons have demonstrated impressive creativity and dedication in pursuing truth, justice, and redress for our clients.
