Michael Sang Correa is alleged to be a member of the notorious Junglers death squad, a paramilitary unit that carried out widespread human rights abuses during Gambian President Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship, including torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killing. Correa and the Junglers allegedly engaged in torture and other abuses of perceived political opponents of Jammeh’s regime, especially those suspected to be participants in a failed coup d’état in 2006.
Since 2018, testimony from victims, witnesses, and former Junglers at the Gambian Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission have implicated Correa in torture and extrajudicial killings. On June 11, 2020, Correa was indicted for torture and conspiracy to commit torture under the U.S. extraterritorial torture statute, 18 U.S.C. §2340A, in the U.S. District of Colorado. He is currently detained in the United States.
