CJA would like to thank our generous sponsors and supporters who made our 15th Anniversary Dinner a resounding success. Over 350 CJA supporters, partners and clients joined us on May 14th in San Francisco to celebrate our successes in holding high-ranking perpetrators accountable and providing redress to survivors of human rights abuses.
Latham & Watkins
CJA will present the 2013 Partner in Justice Award to Latham & Watkins. The firm served as pro bono co-counsel on CJA’s Ahmed v. Magan case which resulted in the first judgment ever to hold a member of the notorious Somali National Security Service accountable for human rights violations committed under the brutal military dictatorship that ruled Somalia for 20 years.
Robert "Boby" Duval
Robert Duval is a Haitian human rights activist. In 1975, Duval was imprisoned without charge at Fort Dimanche—a notorious prison, where hundreds of opponents of Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier were forcibly disappeared. Starved and tortured for 17 months, Duval was on the brink of death when Amnesty International and President Jimmy Carter secured his release in 1977.
Ahmed Salah
Ahmed Salah has been an activist and member of Egypt's protest movements since 2001. He was a founding member of Kefaya (the Egyptian Movement for Change) in 2004 and served as a member of the Coordinators Council. He also co-founded and coordinated the youth protest movement Youth for Change.
Guatemala Attorney General Claudia Paz y Paz
Dr. Paz y Paz is Guatemala's first woman Attorney General and has made unprecedented strides in the prosecution of organized crime, political corruption and human rights. She is the first Guatemalan law enforcement official to prosecute those responsible for human rights abuses committed by the military dictatorship controlled by then President and General Ríos Montt, including the genocide of over 200,000 Mayans. Dr. Paz y Paz and her team have built the case against former General Ríos Montt for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.
CJA's Annual Dinner
Each year at our Annual Dinner, CJA honors an individual or organization who has made an outstanding contribution to the movement for global justice with The Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award.
