Major Gifts Officer

CJA is currently accepting applications for a Major Gifts Officer. This position contributes to CJA’s overall mission by spearheading efforts to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward those who have made or have the capacity to make major gifts. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional with substantial experience and success in developing a portfolio of high net worth donors and prospects. S/he will have experience developing moves management strategies, striking key partnerships, and exploring innovative funding mechanisms. This is a full-time, exempt position.

The Major Gifts Officer reports to the Director of Strategic Partnerships. S/he works with the Executive Director and Board, Development and Social Media Coordinator and other staff. Primary Responsibilities include leading design and implementation of CJA’s major donor strategy and implements major giving initiatives. The Major Gifts Officer is expected to identify additional individual donors with giving interest, access and capacity for solicitation and stewardship.

Professional Qualifications
• At least five years of successful experience in designing and initiating major donor solicitations and campaigns;
• Proven results in increasing individual donor portfolios and contributions;
• Demonstrated success as a front-line fundraiser;
• Well-honed skills in developing donor cultivation and solicitation strategies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, analytic, organizational and planning skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on a team and to build and maintain positive
relationships with all levels of the organization, including volunteer leadership, senior
management and staff;
• Outstanding interpersonal skills; a high level of comfort with direct donor interaction,
including discussions of personal and family finances;
• Knowledge of and ability to use fundraising databases;
• High level of discretion and respect for donor privacy;
• Initiative and independence combined with the ability to work well as part of team.
• Strong project management and detail skills;
• Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred);
• Ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues and to inspire and motivate others;
• Strength in multi-tasking, goal-setting and workload prioritization;
• Experienced strategist, self-starter, results-oriented, and open to change;
• Experience with various forms of media, including online platforms;
• Commitment to international human rights; and
• Ability and willingness to travel occasionally in the United States.

Legal Internships

We generally accept second and third year law student interns each semester and during the summer and winter terms to work at our offices in San Francisco.  Exceptional first year law students may be considered for the summer term. These positions are unpaid.

CJA is currently accepting applications for part- or full-time externships for Spring 2018.  Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

CJA is also currently accepting applications for full-time internships for Summer 2018. Please identify in your cover letter:

  1. The term for which you are applying;
  2. Any relevant coursework (especially evidence, advanced civil procedure, federal courts, trial advocacy, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, public international or comparative law, and immigration law), and your professor(s) for any human rights law, humanitarian law, or related international law courses;
  3. Any language abilities, especially Spanish; French; Somali; Khmai; Arabic; Farsi; Haitian Creole; Swahili or any southeast Asian languages.
  4. Any deadlines you need to meet to secure funding for your internship.

We are particularly interested in students with some familiarity with human rights law and evidence. The work that you do will depend greatly on our case needs at the time of your internship, but you can expect that much of the work will involve legal research and writing. Please be aware that much of our work is litigation-related, and that a majority of research assignments may relate more to evidence, procedure and domestic law than to matters of international or human rights law.

Legal Fellowships

CJA seeks candidates with excellent written and oral communication skills and a keen interest in CJA’s mission to apply for fellowships that would start in September 2018.

A fellowship at CJA gives an entry-level lawyer the opportunity to work for 1-2 years as a junior staff attorney at CJA’s offices in San Francisco. Ideal candidates are third-year law students, judicial clerks, U.S. LLM students, or recent law graduates with a demonstrated interest in international human rights law or international criminal law. Click here for more information.

As a small non-profit organization, CJA relies on the help of volunteers and pro bono professionals who are dedicated to bringing human rights abusers to justice. We offer volunteer opportunities for students or professionals.

CJA partners with outside law firms and investigation firms who provide significant pro bono resources to investigate and litigate large and complex cases on behalf of our clients, to help bring our cases to trial and hold human rights abusers accountable. On occasion, we also work with lawyers, non-legal professionals, and other volunteers on a pro bono basis on more limited and discrete projects.  This includes appellate work, FOIA, foreign language translation, country monitoring, research, fundraising, marketing, IT/tech, web and graphic design, special event support, and administrative assistance.
