Hassan Bility is the director of the Global Justice and Research Project (GJRP), a non governmental organization dedicated to the documentation of war time atrocities in Liberia and to assisting victims in their pursuit of justice for these crimes.  Under Mr. Bility’s leadership, the GJRP’s documentation work has led to the investigation and arrests of alleged Liberian war criminals throughout Europe and the U.S., including the arrest of  former Liberian rebel commanders Alieu Kosiah in Switzerland, and Martina Johnson in Belgium; the arrest of Charles Taylor’s ex-wife Agnes Reeves Taylor in the UK; and the arrest and eventual conviction of former ULIMO rebel commander Mohammed Jabbateh in the U.S. We are honored to award him the Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights award for his courage, and his singular pursuit of justice for Liberia. Mintz Group has helped CJA gather facts at virtually every stage of the litigation process, investigating human rights abusers from more than 10 countries. Starting in 2005, Mintz Group investigators worked closely with CJA to find the assets of Emmanuel “Toto” Constant, a paramilitary leader responsible for atrocities and murders in Haiti during the 1990s, who was living in Queens, NY as a real estate agent.  Constant was ultimately ordered to pay $19 million to CJA’s clients and went to prison for unrelated mortgage fraud. Since then, Mintz investigators have assisted CJA with locating dozens of abusers who have settled in the U.S. (a number of whom were hiding behind aliases), finding their assets, and interviewing their former associates around the world.  Mintz even pursued a murderer who had disappeared into the U.S. witness protection program. And finally, Mintz has helped train CJA’s legal staff, strengthening our own investigative skills.

With special performance by Artem Kolesov , a concert violinist who fled Russia because of the persecution of LGBT people. In a YouTube video that went viral in April, 2017, Kolesov courageously came out in order to inspire other Russian LGBTQ youth and combat Russia’s persecution of its LGBTQ citizens. Artem’s story gives strength and hope to those living in repression. Artem’s noble effort was recognized at the 2017 Logo TV Trailblazer Awards, where he performed in a tribute to all persecuted LGBTQ people.
