A pioneer in the movement for human rights in Honduras, Zenaida Velásquez Rodriguez is the sister of Manfredo Velásquez, who was abducted and disappeared by Honduran security forces.
Clients: Relatives of Hans Madisson
Hans Madisson Lopez was abducted by military intelligence agents on the same night as Oscar and Gloria Reyes and in the same neighborhood. Many believe that Madisson’s abduction was a case of mistaken identity. All the same, Madisson was forcibly disappeared, tortured and finally decapitated.
The Torture and Disappearance of Manfredo Velasquez
Manfredo Velásquez, a teacher, graduate student and student union leader was abducted by Honduran security forces on September 12, 1981. Manfredo was kidnapped in broad daylight in the parking lot of a movie theater in downtown Tegucigalpa. He was never seen again.
Clients: Oscar and Gloria Reyes
In July 1982, Oscar and Gloria were abducted from their home along with their daughter and two employees. They were tortured and detained for more than five months before being exiled to the United States. In the U.S., Oscar and Gloria have once again become prominent members of their community. Oscar is the director of El Pregonero, a Washington D.C. area Spanish-language weekly newspaper affiliated with the Catholic Church.
