Celebrating Our Victories in the Movement for Global Justice
CJA would like to thank our generous sponsors and supporters who made our 2012 Annual Dinner, Celebrating our Victories in the Movement for Global Justice, a resounding success. We feel very fortunate to be part of such a committed and vibrant community of human rights activists. For a complete list of sponsors, click here.
Over 300 CJA supporters, partners and clients joined us on May 10th in San Francisco to celebrate our successes in holding high-ranking perpetrators accountable and providing redress to survivors of human rights abuses.
The evening program provided powerful examples of some of the people who have made CJA’s work possible:
- Kerry Kennedy, President of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights,
gave the keynote address. She spoke eloquently about human rights and
moral courage. She shared personal stories about her early involvement
with human rights issues from violence against women to working with
refugees from El Salvador. All of these experiences came together to
set her on a path devoted to the pursuit of justice, the promotion and
protection of basic rights, and the rule of law.
Ambassador Robert White accepted the Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award for
his courageous and inspiring work for justice in El Salvador and
Paraguay. White spoke about his experiences as the U.S. Ambassador to
El Salvador where he exposed widespread atrocities committed by the
Salvadoran government and military and his work with CJA on our
Salvadoran cases. To read more about Ambassador White, please go here.- We heard inspiring remarks from CJA clients Sophany Bay of Cambodia, Aldo Cabello of Chile, and Carlos Mauricio of El Salvador.
The Champion of Justice Award was given to Lydia Cacho
for her work to hold perpetrators of violence against women accountable
for their crimes despite threats to her own life. She called on all of
us to stand together in the struggle to stop violence against women. Click here for information about Ms. Cacho's new book Slavery Inc.: The Untold Story of International Sex Trafficking.- Leo Cunningham accepted the Partner in Justice Award on behalf of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati for its demonstrated commitment to human rights and history of working with CJA. Wilson Sonsini worked as pro bono co-counsel on the path breaking case which addressed abuses committed by Pinochet's Caravan of Death, Cabello v. Fernandez Larios, and is currently co-counsel on Cabrera v. Jiménez Naranjo.
