Long Beach, CA Forum: July 26, 2014

On July 26, 2014, CJA and the Applied Social Research Institute of Cambodia (ASRIC) held a forum for Cambodian survivors at the Khmer Arts Center in Long Beach, California, to update them on the progress of Case 002/01.  The gathering of approximately 50 survivors and their families heard from Dr. Leakhena Nou, Executive Director of ASRIC, presented her research findings on the physical and emotional effects of the Khmer Rouge tragedy on survivors in the United States.  Forum attendees then heard from CJA Staff Attorney Nushin Sarkarati, who briefed the survivors on the expected outcomes of the trial, and the proposed reparation programs.  CJA client Sophany Bay also presented to the attendees about her experience testifying before the court.

Two weeks later, on August 7th, 2014, the Court sentenced Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan to life imprisonment and awarded reparations to the 3,866 victims participating in the trial.
